The AOP Monthelie 1er Cru "Meix-Bataille" is a red wine from Domaine Changarnier, a small family-owned winery situated in the village of Monthelie, at the heart of the petite Bourgogne appellation of the same name. This region, which spans just 109 hectares, borders Volnay, Meursault, and Auxey-Duresses, with only 34.8 hectares classified as Premier Cru. Changarnier owns a mere 5 hectares spread over ten different plots, producing a total of 12 wines with an overall output that does not exceed 30,000 bottles.
This particular wine originates from a "climat" of 0.29 hectares named "Meix Bataille," where "meix" refers to the Burgundian term for farmhouse. Crafted from Pinot Noir, this wine undergoes ageing in new oak barrels, accounting for 20% of the maturation process over 12 months. The wine is robust, spiced, and masculine. A true gem, of which only 1,000 bottles have been produced, it is expected to improve from its fifth year and can be enjoyed for over a decade.
